Hi

I have problem exporting my revit model to IFC.

Its quite large project. 350MB

I have made these size of projects before and still managed to make IFC.

But now i am geting error :

There has been an unrecoverable error during export. Export will now be aborted.

I have Insatlled all the latest uptates , and also IFC exporter 2016 V16.3... nothing works.

Tryed to hide some of the building and then it manage to export.

Could somone try out my revit file to export and find solution for this problem?!

Revit File is to large to have it on attachment!?

Hoping for the best

Kaupo

Dear Kaupo,

Thank you for your report.

Yes, 350 MB may well be too big to attach here.

Can you put it on dropbox or somewhere for me and send me a link?

Or send it via wetransfer?

Thank you!

Best regards,

Jeremy

Hi

I have sent a link to you .

To keep the project file private (confidential) I can send the  Dropbox link person to person rather to post it here.

Hoping for the best

Kaupo

Hi,

did you notice that there is a new version for the IFC Exporter App ?

https://apps.autodesk.com/RVT/en/Detail/Index?id=appstore.exchange.autodesk.com:ifc2016_windows32and...

Maybe already fixed, who knows ?

Edit: didn't read that you already use this version, sorry.

Dear Kaupo,

Thank you for your sample RVT model in the dropbox folder, which I downloaded successfully.

I logged the issue REVIT-82702 [IFC export of large Revit model causes unrecoverable error] with our development team for this on your behalf and added your description and model to that as it requires further exploration and analysis. Please make a note of this number for future reference.

Just as you say, let's hope for the best.

Best regards,

Jeremy

Dear Kaupo,

Thank you again for your sample RVT model.

The development team analysed it when working on and resolving the issue REVIT-82702 [IFC export of large Revit model causes unrecoverable error] that I logged for this on your behalf.

Here is the result:

This is the standard 'too big to export' issue, which will be resolved in the future by an update of the IFC toolkit that we use.

The issue is somewhere in the Structural Framing Assembly category. We narrowed it down to discover some particularly hard to export elements.

The issue is primarily with the HCE-400 family, where each beam is highly tessellated and exported individually. A workaround would be to have a coarse representation of this family that uses linear approximations for the arced cutouts; this would allow for a much smaller tessellation that would likely result in a smaller file.

Note that IFC4 Design Transfer exports as a 237 MB IFC file.

I hope that helps for the time being, while we wait for the imporovements coming with the updated toolkit.

Best regards,

Jeremy

Dear Kaupo,

Yet another update from the development team on the issue REVIT-82702 [IFC export of large Revit model causes unrecoverable error]. They say:

Update - I made a local change that I plan to back-submit back to the Revit 2015 and 2016 open source; it allows the model to export by changing the level of detail to "Extra Low". Can you please check if the generated file is acceptable for you now?

We are looking forward to your feedback!

Thank you!

Best regards,

Jeremy

Hi,

We've been getting this message also.

I did multiple tries and it keep giving me the error and crashing Revit.

After reading this post I updated my IFC 2016 and  tried exporting my ventilation model (384mb) with the Low option and it failed.

I can send a box link to the model if necessary.

Now trying with Extra Low as per previous post.

My current Setup:

Hi,

No luck, even with Very Low option I got an error message after 1h45min of processing.

So no viable options are available for the moment.

Dear Jonathan,

Sorry to hear it.

Yes, please provide access to your problematic model and I'll pass it on to the development team.

Please provide the exact steps to reproduce the problem:

Please make sure to include the exact version numbers etc. of all the components that you are working with.

Thank you!

Dear Jad and Jonathan,

Thank you for the two sample files:

  • 70000_m_ve_2016.rvt (374620160 bytes)
  • ifc_export.zip (377844213 bytes)

I reopened the issue REVIT-82702 [IFC export of large Revit model causes unrecoverable error] for you and atteched them to it.

I still lack the exact steps to reproduce the problem:

http://thebuildingcoder.typepad.com/blog/about-the-author.html#1b

Please make sure to include the exact version numbers etc. of all the components that you are working with.

Best regards,

Hi Jeremy,

I updated the IFC_2016_Export_Report in the shared box folder with the steps I take to try to export in IFC format.

This project was upgraded from 2015 UR10 just before christmas. Ther revit build is also in the report. What other "version numbers" would you need?

Were using Revit on both Citrix and normal, my tests are using a normal license. We've tested on both with the same results.

Thanks for the follow up.

Dear Jonathan,

Thank you for your update and appreciation.

The development team commented on the issue REVIT-82702 [IFC export of large Revit model causes unrecoverable error] and say:

"The user is going to have to wait until the next version of the open source to try again. We expect this next month."

I hope this helps.

Best regards,

Jeremy

HI Jeremy,

Thanks for the update and support!

You still have the link to my model so the team will already be able to check if the up comming upgrade is up to the task or not.

Looking forward,

Jonathan

Hi

Thank you .

Making HCE-400 family more coarse made it work. It managed to export IFC.

Do you have a tool to find all trouble  cousing familys or some simpel way to find them, guide tu find them.

I'm very grateful for your help.

Kaupo

Hi Jeremy,

FYI, the clients BIM Manager, who is pushing for IFC files, tried exporting the model with the 2015 version and it worked!?!?  But for some reason the 2016 doesn't.

Furthur testing done by the Ventilation firm with 2016 = the exported IFC4 format didn't seem to export the round duct elbows and when they tried the IFC2x3 the diffusers disapeared. (see attached files, change txt to ifc)

I added a 2015 version of the model in the shared "box" folder

Thanks,

Jonathan

Dear Kaupo,

Thank you very much for your confirmation!

I am very glad to hear you can successfully export now, using the coarse setting.

I passed on your question on how to find problematic families to the development team and will update you as soon as I have any news.

Best regards,

Jeremy

Dear Jonathan,

Thank you for your update and new information.

At the moment, all I can do is repeat the information that the development team provided on the issue REVIT-82702 [IFC export of large Revit model causes unrecoverable error], saying:

"The user is going to have to wait until the next version of the open source to try again. We expect this next month."

I would suggest that you follow that advice and let us know how it goes with the new version once it has been released.

At that point, I suggest that yu open an new thread here and provide all the relevant sample files and reproducible case descriptions in one fell swoop.

Otherwise, things will get much too complicated to keep track of.

Thank you for your understanding.

I hope this helps.

Best regards,

Jeremy

Hi @jeremytammik i am facing same problem for two of my files.

one of them is just around 3.6 mb and one is about 5.8 mb

while exporting i am getting Unrecoverable error for 3.6 mb model and for 5.8 mb model, i am getting 439 mb IFC file which is shocking.

it would be great help if you can suggest any solution to resolve the problem.

the models are attached below.

Thanks and Regards,
