Insert Wall(s) from External File

I am looking to create a library Revit model that contains 100's of wall Types.  Then someway, programmatically, create a command on my company ribbon that would allow a user to insert, from that model, specific walls into my current project model.  Does the Revit API offer a way to insert a specific wall from a Revit file that contains multiple wall types?  In a bigger picture i would want to also filter the walls, for example....

Show me all "Metal Stud", "1hr" walls.  Then i could check off the 3 that i'd like to insert into my project.

Any thoughts on a way to accomplish this??

First verify if you can do that manually. id imagine you need to link in the file and copy/paste. or at least have the file open.
