You mean are you able to run such a add-in that is built agains 2014 API under Revit 2012?

In general I don't think it will work, even if you would use only methods/properties that are supported by 2012. I'm afraid that API between versions aren't binary compatible.

Someone from ADSK can confirm this but I think your odds are quite small.

You cannot use the API that is exposed for Revit 2014 on Revit 2012. There will be compilation error.
