Call method in IExternalApplication

Is there a option to call a method in IExternalApplication from a Event.

I have a Event and i want that Event to update a Ribbon button. I looked at http://thebuildingcoder.typepad.com/blog/2012/11/roll-your-own-toggle-button.html but i am not sure how to get the Application in the Event.

Never mind, overlooked the fact that the App property is static.
