Routine to convert native Faro (FLS) or Leica/Topcon (PTS) scan folders to RCS

Routine to convert native Faro (FLS) or Leica/Topcon (PTS) scan folders to RCS

We reuse native Faro laser scans (FLS) all the time in different ReCAP projects.  Every time we need a native scan we need to IMPORT the FLS folder.  Why can't Autodesk convert all this native RAW scan data into a RCS Recap folder format?  I want to store and backup RCS folders not FLS folders and bypass the multiple imports of the same FLS raw scan folders.

Hi Tim,

I believe its because Faro now sell licences for Scene.  So don't allow users to bypass Scene with a "Scanner -> SD card -> Recap" easy workflow....

Hello from Spain, Tim.

I think there is a way to do that:
1- Open a new ReCap project and import your FLS folder like always.
2- After importing and indexing, you get a rcp file and a support folder.
3- In the support folder, there is a rcs file. You can import this rcs file in other ReCap project.

Hope this helps

Amorap,
Thank you for your valued feedback. You are correct that RCS files are created and part of the support folder. I tested the RCS files by adding them to a completely new project.

1) I was initially surprised to see how long it takes to auto-register RCS files. However, the reported time of 26 minutes was actually 5 minutes. - AWESOME, no issue here....

2) Bubbles/scan locations - GOOD!!!!

3) Real view/panoramic pictures - GOOD!!!

4) Registration reports - GOOD!!!!

5) The support folder for this new RCP does not contain the original RCS files. Interesting....
Thank you!

Here is what I recently discovered:

A fast way to reuse the individual and “non-unified” RCS files already imported/converted into a RCP project.  The individual RCS files, contained in the support folder, are unstructured.  However, if we combine the RCS file with the RCC file, copied from the RCP support folder, we now have structured scan data which can be easily reused into a new RCP project.  This appears to work very well.

So...  Drag and drop BOTH the RCS and RCC files, from an existing ReCap project support folder, into a new ReCap project to skip the slow import process of native FLS/PTS files.

Hey everyone,

By mistake, I just discovered a really cool workflow.  Launch ReCap, (not Pro),  Drag and drop your native scan files into a new project.  ReCap will IMPORT and INDEX (not register) your scan files.  If you look in the support folder you will see those valued RCS/RCC files.  Now you can save these scan files and reuse them in different projects.

I also "range clip" all imported scans:

  • Reduces scan sizes and excludes long range less accurately located points.  Review your hardware specifications to confirm your desired accuracy to import.  For example, I have a Faro Focus S70 which is certified accurate +/- 1mm at under 25 meters.  (For distances larger than 25 meters, add 0.1 mm/m.)
  • This means at 35 meters distances my accuracy is +/- 2mm, etc...
