Photogrammetry & Lidar

Scanning App for Smart Phones

This suggestion includes Recap Photo.

What I would like to see Autodesk do is develop and release an app along the lines of the following.

With the release of the new Iphone 12 Max Pro and its in built Lidar scanner I found the need to purchase one to try it out for engineering design purposes.

What I would like to see is as follows,

1. Auto take photos.  With photogrammetry the biggest issue I find is taking enough photos with enough or the correct amount of overlap. Automating this would solve that issue.

2. Integrate point 1 with the Lidar sensor in the phone to take a lidar snap shot at every 'xxx' interval.

3. Use the phones GPS & Compass and embed the metadata into both the images and Lidar for assisted alignment.

4. Enable data to be extracted so one can.....

4a. Send back to the office via OneDrive or similar.
4b. Upload directly to Recap for processing.

I say both options as, as a user I need 'others' to take data and send to me for me processing.

There are a couple of apps out there. None do exactly what I would like or I need other software licences to get them to work properly. As this technology evolves I would like to be able to ask some of the site engineers to photograph and scan small areas and send me the data for processing back in the office. While some positioning will be required with regards to the lidar scans at least they will be close.

I have found so far a lidar single capture produces less error than trying to walk around say a 'small pump set' for example than trying to scan the whole thing.  Single lidar shots can be aligned where as a multi walk scan around can get an amount of overlap error where the object appears doubled up.

Just a thought

regards,

Andrew.
