Larger Object Meshes

Larger Object Meshes

I am trying to mesh a building larger than the 30m limit box to share in the Autodesk Viewer. This is not currently an option but would be beneficial for the software.

I've tried using Poisson reconstruction in MeshLab and CloudCompare to turn the point cloud I have of a large building and surrounding trees (plus a few short sections of road) into a mesh, because Recap can't do an area this big, without success. Perhaps adding the option to use our own hardware (rather than the Autodesk cloud service) to mesh objects would allow the limit to be bypassed for users running the meshing locally.

As a first project I would like to get the building into 3DS Max as a mesh that I can then optimise and export to run around in a video game engine but if I could obtain suitable scan data I would also like to 3D print scale models of buildings for model railways.

The meshing feature might be more appropriate to 3DS Max however. That could perhaps be done by adding the option to import a point cloud as an editable mesh consisting only of isolated vertices (rather than as a point cloud object) and then adding a command to automatically fill the gaps between the vertices with faces.

The problem with a local reconstruction option: it would require significant hardware, to the point where as a desktop it would effectively be sitting idle.  It won't be practical (or potentially even possible) with the average desktop.

As a more effective solution I would suggest breaking it up into logical chunks and meshing those individually.  Distant points should have zero influence on nearby points so no point having them present.
