In design application mesh creation

Consider this workflow.

Drafter/modeller opens AutoCAD, attaches (xref) a recap project. Then isolates and is able to select a specific set of points, and runs a create mesh command that creates a mesh in the DWG in the same location as the points that were selected. Result is the existing asset captures quickly and accurately.
Local processing would be the obvious first step, but for more complicated or larger mesh areas a cloud option might be preferred.

Current situation:

Drafter/modeller opens AutoCAD and attaches (xref) a recap project. This can be modelled by using the limited feature identification tools, but is time consuming. Alternatively the drafter can then go to Recap, find the same dataset, select the points and create a mesh. Once complete the mesh is then downloaded, it can be imported into AutoCAD and then needs to be transformed/moved to the correct coordinates (which basically requires a visual alignment).

This takes significantly more time and is much less accurate.

hey @david.manningXME8A ,

Thanks for the suggestion - makes sense.

We have some updates to the meshing on the way that will go some of the way to streamlining this workflow. This includes a new Local meshing option, that creates a segmented mesh that is selectable.

New workflow would be:

  • Select points in ReCap
  • Process mesh using Scan to Mesh Local Processing
  • (Alternative would be to mesh whole point cloud, then select on the mesh object(s) you want to export)
  • Export mesh, maintaining its coordinates.

We won't be supported DWG as an export format in the next release, but its on our roadmap.

Hi @mike_deacon2KEDC ,
Thank you for the reply, it is very much appreciated. It is great to hear that this is on the near term plan and I look forward to testing the result.

Regards,

@david.manningXME8A With the latest segmented mesh generation and editor tool (in ReCap 2026), users should be able to perform this in ReCAp and take the light weight mesh to ACAD avoiding handling large data related issues. CAn you check this out and provide your feedback?
