Hello @Anonymous
I don't see any difficulties in working with external disks.
I would focus on two conditions:
1. Good SSD m.2 with a speed of 2-3 GB / s
2. High-speed Thunderbolt 3 Type C port with a speed of 5 GB / s
With these characteristics, you will not notice the difference with the internal SSD.

Why is it useless?
It's up to you how to manage your files.
You can on an external drive, you can on an internal one, or you can in the cloud.
I find it difficult to understand your needs. But I would work on the current project on an internal disk, and projects that have ended would be stored on an external hard disk or in the cloud with the ability to quickly access them in case of need.

Sorry, maybe I post the question wrong. I would like to know if I can work on the current project using the external disk directly

Yes, you can work with your current project using an external hard drive. Performance will depend on the hardware you choose.
