Why can't I calculate photos locally in Recap Photo?

Hello everyone

I have downloaded a trial version of software Autodesk Recap. Yet I couldn't process the photos locally, I had to do it on the 360 drive.

So basically I really don't understand what the trial and the subscribed version respectively offer, and I can't buy the software without being sure that I will be able to process the photos, so I have several questions:

- What is A360 drive? Do I have access to it only because I am on trial or does anyone does have access to it without having subscribed to a Recap Photo licence?

- What is the limit number of pictures you can process on A360 drive?

- Are we clear that the photos / models I have processed on the drive are exclusively my own and that I can use them however I wish?

- How come I can't calculate photos locally inside of the Recap Photo software itself?

Hi,

In Trial mode, ReCap Photo will allow you to process your photos on the cloud and you get 42 cloud credits to try out.

After Trial mode, all viewing and editing features are available to use for free, but reconstructions are not possible.

On subscription, one gets access to reconstruction capability. Note each reconstruction charges cloud credits based on number of photos.

There is no local processing capability available in ReCap Photo.

Thank you for your quick answer.

I'm not sure I understood everything though: in the interface of Recap photo installed on the computer, there's a menu where I can load my photos, but when I want to calculate them, it tells me I have "0 credit", whereas I'm on trial and as you say, I should have 42 credits. Yet I could calculate them without credits on A360 drive. Is that the same service?

Furthermore, when you're on subscription, in addition to the 300euros/year you pay, do you have to pay for extra credits so as to calculate your photos and reconstruct your models? Or does the annual subscription give you an unlimited number of credits?

I'm discovering this too and it's a deal-breaker for me. Guess I wont be using an Autodesk product for my photogrammetry needs.

I would pay the subscription price If i was able to process locally.

The problem with a local reconstruction option, is that your desktop runs a different OS and hardware than what they're using on the cloud side.  Aside from the benefits of scalable, massively-parallel computing, it also means they only have to maintain one set of code specifically built for the intended system.  Having a local reconstruction option would mean a parallel set of code which will not be able to use certain features, and would have to work from local storage as well.  Not to mention based on ReMake the local option would likely be Win only, making certain other users rather cranky.

If there were enough non-hobby/non-EDU interest, I'm certain they would consider it an option.  Until then there just isn't any benefit in doing it.

Thank you for all your answers. These insights are instructive but they do not answer my main concern:

Because I'm not particularly fond of the idea of paying 300£ a year which is already quite a sum, if it's only to have to pay more credits in addition to that, I'm sure you understand....:/

For instance here in the attached picture, I want to process my object but it tells me I need 12 credits, but I'm on the trial version!

Well no it didn't really answer my question because I thought it was absurd to pay 300 dollars a year for nothing, as you have to buy more cloud credits for each reconstruction. I thought it was thus much better to buy Agisoft Photoscan for only 200 dollars instead.

But then I looked by myself for a long time and I ended up finding an appropriate answer to my question so I would like to put it here so that you can confirm this is correct:

When you subscribe for Recap Photo, you are given 100 cloud credits PER YEAR. For each project going up to 300 photos maximum will cost 12 cloud credits. It means that if you spend more than your annual 100 cloud credits, then you'll have to buy more cloud credits for 1$ a credit.

Is that all correct? Thank you for your answer, which will make me decide definitely if it's worth buying Autodesk or really to expensive for the provided service 🙂

Hi,

Yes every reconstruction is charged cloud credits and is based on number of photos. It is a consumption based model, one pays based on the number of reconstructions they kick-off. Yearly subscription allows one to *access* the reconstruction capability. If one does not need that capability, there is no need to subscribe, rest of the software functionality is free to use.
