Re: RECAP without cloud, ie Using your own hardware to process.

Hi Anil, Hi all,

Just got a few questions as I am digging into the "new" Recap photo...

1) Is your statement :
"Regarding cloud credit question, when you process Photo to 3D project using ultra mode it will required cloud credits.  If you are not happy with output and resubmit project for process, then it will be free."

Is this statement still valid today ?

2) I can't found how you to resubmit a job that I am not happy with, without reconsuming cloud credits...

3) A few weeks ago (with Remake/Recap) processing photo on your local machine was possible but now with the new Recap Photo this option is gone.
Only cloud processing is possible. Is this really something on Autodesk's roadmap to re-introduce this option ?

4) I do believe the options to process Ultra or standard is gone, ... am I right ?

Thanks for your time and kind Regards,
Nicolas

Same questions here, bring back local processing!

I purchased a subscription to ReCap Photo with the intention to use my computer to locally process my photogrammetry scans. Why is this not an option in ReCap photo when it appears to be a direct 'remake' or Remake?

I've already ran a few photos through using my cloud credits and I haven't received usable models yet. It's a waste of time & money to wait for all of my photos to upload to the servers instead of just processing them myself.

Hi,

Thank you for the feedback!

There is not resubmit option in ReCap Photo. If images have atleast 60% and close to 80% overlap, the scene is in focus, there is no motion blur and exposure is set correctly, it will result in successful reconstruction. For Aerial captures, using automated UAV flight controller/mapper one can generate very robust captures for photogrammetry as all the above mentioned quality parameters can be controlled.

The meshes/point clouds are generated at optimal quality, hence there is no option to select the quality levels.

Cloud processing allows for scalable workflows and hence at this point there are no plans to introduce local reconstruction.

Murali

I understand the rationale for this, including why it wouldn't be applicable for the average (and even most high-end) desktops.  I'd still like to put a "bug in your ear", so to speak, for customers who already have substantial server architecture.  A "private version" for the Enterprise-level customers would be appreciated, something capable of running privately on in-house server infrastructure rather than a third-party one, to satisfy security-oriented clients.  The immediate answer is "No", and I'm OK with that.  But I'd like there to at least be some consideration of the idea for future expansion.

If ReCap is meant to replace ReMake then it should have the same local processing functionality. If it worked before, why wouldn't it work now? Local processing is far more efficient for my workflows.

I am actually heavily testing other options as well, to name a few, Pix4D and Photoscan, both have option to process locally (and is what folks do the most with those 2. Actually photoscan does not even do cloud. Pix4D does both.)

This is right it does take time to process locally. I usually have around 300 picts per job, and it does take a few hours on my standard machine to process, but it's not that bad.
So, I'd say, local processing will have a heavy weight on the balance when choosing the one...
I do think processing locally at this time is not that bad, as you also need to take into account upload/download time (wich I agree is not that bad either with a good connection), but letting customer the choice is a noble decision... 🙂

Very disappointing if Autodesk gets rid of this feature, looks like they want to take more of our money. Also I had a job fail on the cloud and the credits were not reimbursed.

... only cloud reconstruction .... this is very bad.

I would only use the software with lokal reconstruction here at Porsche Engineering.

So i had to buy an other software...

Hi Pablo,

Could give us more details on your failed project? We will be able to help.

What software did you buy? I am also looking for alternatives. Cloud processing is not an option for me, as I am often working with partial and experimental captures so cloud processing fails 50/50, HUGE waste of my money and very frsutrating.

This is an immediate no go for me, Remake works amazingly well locally for me and takes maybe 20 minutes to generate models. Just installed recap to try it out and only see the network option. Absolutely terrible to only provide this.

I really love how well remake works but if it's being replaced and there is no local generation option I'm going to have to look elsewhere I guess... really disappointing too as I'm loving scanning and printing things locally.

Switch to Reality Capture. It processes faster than Remake ever did locally with higher quality and more options. The cleanup tools are missing but that's easy to do in another 3D package.

You can get it for the same price as Recap on Steam ($40 / mo).

Woah, thanks for the heads up, definitely checking this out, and on Steam, even better for me!

Sorry for the double post, however just wanted to say Reality Capture works great. I still love Remake and will use it up until the end, but it's nice to have a great alternative! Thanks!

thanks for the reality capture steam alert.

I will switch to that too. Glad to find a solution to this headache.

Well I guess my answer has been given... I have a machine that produces at speeds faster than your cloud service. I loved Autodesk Remake and was looking forward to using Recap Pro because the ability to do my Photogrammetry objects / maps in one software was a nice touch. I have 75 pictures of a deer femur to reconstruct cost 12 credits that is terrible. This was just to demonstrate how photogrammetry could be used at a museum. I could not let my organization to do such a costly purchase when they have millions of artifacts to scan, a full time job for multiple people.

Anyone can you recommend a software I can utilize on a local machine to do out in the field processes? As of right now mostly object/artifact oriented scans. I will be doing Drone UAV 3D Mapping and Drone Photogrammetry starting in the summer. One piece of software hopefully with educational licensing would be best. I will have to learn a new piece of software it sounds like.

Best Regards,

Disappointing indeed! My student research is "in the field" where no internet connections are available. Without the ability to experiment, ReCap in any form is useless. Remake died the day my computer hard drive crashed...must look for other software I can afford on no budget.

You might try 3DF Zephyr or Agisoft Photoscan. Depending on your photoset sizes 3DF Zephyr might be the way to go, the UI is really easy to use and there's a free tier that can process up to 50 images. Agisoft is a one-time purchase of $180 which is also pretty affordable compared to a monthly plan from the other competitors.

The cost is way to expensive and processing is way to slow.  Items I am asked to photogrammetry are bones at times and I have to explain to the curators the cost for that unidentifiable bone to scanned in now will be 12 dollars for 100 photo's. I seen cloud credits are 1 dollar per after the 100 are used. Which 100 can be used on one statue. I do artifacts/artefacts attempting to help preserve our history digitally. Autodesk ReMake was and is a fantastic piece of software. Having my museum spend the money to build the recommended specification to run ReMake locally at fastest possible speed was no small feat. Now, I have to explain to the organization the cost skyrocketing because of greed. Cloud computing is a nightmare.

I want to process locally period. I have been diving into trials and other photogrammetry software because of the changes. Using my phone as my internet connection source out in the field is not an option. Locations I visited are to remote and once I arrive I want to confirm the object came out correctly before leaving.

Please Autodesk bring back ReMake or charge a yearly fee.

Best Regards,

Chris
