Poor models...

Hello

I have tried a few times to build a 3D model out of stills photographs of my sculptures, using ReCap application (version 19.1.1.2).

Unfortunately, the model I receive isn't so good and I have to invest a lot of time to improve it manually using ZBrush (see attached examples).

By the way, looking at the model in your in ReCap editor, I can see much better model but I think it's because it presents the model with the mesh faces which is taken from the photos …

When I export the RCM model to OBJ and open the OBJ in ZBrush, I am getting the poor model.

Is there anything I can do in order to get a better model?

Thanks a lot

Hi omerom88,

If you can elaborate on how the model from Recap Photo is poor, we will be able to better assist you.

Regarding to ZBrush, since it is not one of Autodesk's product we won't be able to give you as much support in regards to how ZBrush is importing our model. However you can try using the .obj (quad) export when using it with ZBrush, based on our limited experience with ZBrush, they seem to be using a quad based representation instead of triangles for their model.

Thanks and hope it helps,

Naimin

Thanks for your response.

The problem is that I input about 40 still images (in example1, 70 still images in other examples), good resolution (4.5-5Mpixel), 360 degrees, clear photos that includes all sculpture's details and receive – a 3D model of a distorted sculpture without many details …

If you'll have a look at "example1.jpg" (sent in the previous session) you can easily see:

  • Face details (eyes, nose, ears …) in the left part of the image (which is an image of the sculpture head)
  • A distorted and unclear face on the right part of the image (which was taken from the model ReCap has built).

I can send you more examples if it can help …

The .obj (quad) export doesn't make it better.

I don't think it has something to do with how ZBrush import your model. As written before - I export your RCM model to OBJ (using ReCap) and open the OBJ in ZBrush…

Looking at the RCM model (built by ReCap), I can see poor model (also better than the OBJ but I think it's because it presents the model with the mesh faces which is taken from the photos …

Hi omerom88,

If you wish to capture the finer details of your models you will require more photo coverage of the details, from your explanation using only 40-70 photos is not enough to capture the finer details (this amount is alright for the general structure of the sculpture but not enough for fine details you wish to capture). To capture those finer details you will need to have more close-up shot of the area to augment your existing photo-set to improve reconstruction of those area.

While doing close-up shot, do remember to keep at least 70% overlapping region between shots so our algorithm will be able to detect and stitch them together.

If you are only interested in the shape of the model but not the textures/colors, you could also add unique high contrast markers on the model to help guide our algorithm, since your sculpture is of the same color throughout it is difficult for the algorithm to determine the related pixel between shots hence affecting final reconstruction quality. Those marker will help us locate and match the shots much better, just note that each marker must be unique or they will be wrongly matched.

Thanks,

Naimin
