Importing CAD with Product and Manufacturing Information (PMI)

Is there a way that PowerShape can show Product and Manufacturing Information (PMI) when it is part of an imported CAD model, below is just a basic example of PMI (taken from the web). Quite a few of our customers do not supply 2D drawings. The PMI shows a lot of important information that 3D CAD alone cannot show.

Thanks in advance.

Can you upload a project for us?

There are some setting in the Autodesk manufacturing tool that allow the import of Annotation. Depending on the type of model import, it could be possible.

Hi Jonathan

Thank you for the suggestion. It is a .CATPart model. I can view the PMI in Adobe Acrobat XI Pro, but none of the PMI comes through into PowerShape.

The only CAD we have with embedded PMI are customers' so I am not able to share them.

Could you tell me any more about the "setting in the Autodesk manufacturing tool" please?

Its not that simple to explain, if you send me the project I will see if it can be done. If It can, I will break it down to a point where you only need to place a new resource file into a user defined location to allow you to process annotation.

Hi Jonathan

I have checked with my BDMs and I am afraid I cannot send you the file.

Thank you for the offer though.

Maybe it is time we changed our CAD software.

Regards

Liam.

Hey @liamhand

Sorry to hear that you cant share the file. I was looking online and couldn't find a sample to test. If you stumble across one that you can share, let me know. Or even if you or someone else could create a simple model with some annotation and export as a catpart, we should be able to get this tested.

Hi Jonathan

I have found a "MBE PMI Validation and Conformance Testing Project" online, from NIST, with a step file that replicates the issue I have.

I will attach screenshots of the CAD file in Powershape and in Adobe, along with the step file.

I hope this will be enough to resolve the issue.

Kind regards

Liam

Sorry for the delay,

Can you zip and upload the part again? Something is causing it to crash my exchange and it will not load into PowerShape.

Hi Jonathan

No problem. Just glad you are trying to help.

I have used WINRAR, hope this is ok.

Thank you.

I keep getting a polyline error in PowerShape and Exchange crashes every time I import.

Does this import for you? What version of PowerShape and Exchange are you running? 2020?

Hi Jonathan

I am using 2019 for both Shape and Exchange.

I have attached a screenshot.

Hi Jonathan

Did you have any success with the CAD import?

Thanks

Liam
