Conical barrel tool support?

Hi all,

Can someone tell me how can I define parabolic barrel tool with radius tip in PowerMill. I believe i need to draw the profile, but how can i exploit conical part of tool in 3- and 5-axis programming. Do i need to define lean angle or PowerMill can do it automatically?

I seen on YouTube that HyperMill have Tangential machining, adjusted operation for this kind of tools.

Hi

You would create a form tool from the curve data (usually supplied by the tooling supplier).

From there you do need to build the toolpath and use lead/lean to tilt the tool to the required angle, there's nothing automatic as far as I know.

I have attached a sample project that may help get you started.

Kind Regards

But, the conical part also have radius 500 or 1000 mm. This can't made with form.

I agree for the rest.

This kind of tool is good for finishing. You can add bigger stepowers and control tilt angle to avoid collision.

I hope that Autodesk Development Team will take this in consideration.

Hi

Do you have sample tool geometry?

As you can see in the image, the form tool in the project has a 250mm radius...

Kind Regards

Hi @rdbojan

Thank you for posting in forums.

Please have look in to attached video & I think it's also helps you to create a Parabolic Cutters.

And refer @craig.shipley post for auto tool axis.

Thank you,

Hi Craig,

It's my fault. I have forgotten that you used curve for defining tool, not just by adding spans in form tool - this way you can't put radius after radius.

So, everything is good.

Thank you for your help and fast answers.

Hi  Rdbojan,

Thanks for posting in Autodesk Community!!!

I have added some more information for tangential machining with the help of Swarf finishing. You can use form tool or Tapered Spherical tool for machining. Please refer to the attached PowerMILL project.

Thanks Sudhira,

like I have wrote, point is that conical part of tool have big radius, so u can adjust tilt angle.

Thank you anyway for answering.

I have messed around with these a bit and I got them to work, sort of. I could get it to make the toolpath but could not adjust the contact point like Hypermill. I don't think PM is really equipped to utilize these tools properly.

I agree.

Autodesk should take this into consideration for new strategies.
