Project Internal vs Shared Coordinates NWC Creation

A little confusion going around the office today. So we set up a new model today. Linked in the Arch and Structural models. We used the provided "Specify Coordinates at Point" information, so we are all at the correct real world location. When we create a NWC using Shared Coordinates, our models do not align at all. But, if we change our coordinates to Project Internal. They align in the NWF Navisworks model. Why is this so? If we are all using the same coordinates at a point in Revit. Would we not be using a "Shared Coordinate". Are we missing something? Is using Project Internal point not correct when we export, and our model is just off some how? We just want to make sure this is all setup correctly, so we don't have any issues when we shoot points in the field.

Hi @Anonymous, 

 

Have you moved your project base point in Revit from the default position? In order for Navisworks to read the shared coordinates it needs to be set to the Project Start up Point. 

 

To return the project base point to its startup location:

  1. Unclip the project base point.
  2. Right-click the project base point, and click Move to Startup Location.

Thanks for the response. Typically, I match the survey and project base point of the architects model that we receive. So that everything lines up when linked back and forth. Haven't worked on a job that stated the use of shared coordinates yet. When I setup a job by matching the architects model. We always lineup. I was just curious what the difference is between the two coordinate systems. I will keep in mind to set my base point to 0,0 when using shared coordinates in the future. Thanks.

Thanks for that tip Andrea!

 

How would you move this "default position"? It seems this project point default position is the 0,0,0 for when appending into a Navisworks model. 

 

I have a 0,0,0 point that the process engineers model is using and i need to move my project point to that position in my revit model, this should then insert my revit model to the same location when appending together in Navisworks.

 

Any help on this would be much appreciated!

Hopefully not, as that would effect all my sheets. Also it would be difficult to do that with all the levels/grids and model in place items.

Not sure how else you would be able to align with other models without moving the whole model. You can try get coordinates at a grid intersection from the model you are trying to align with. Then use 'Specify Coordinates at Point', and input those coordinates at that grid intersection. I don't believe that will align the models though (in the software). But, you will match real world coordinates.

 

You could just find how much you are off with the other model and us 'Units and Transform' to adjust the origin and rotation.

Yes I have done your second suggestion, units and transform.

 

Be good to see what autodesk have to say regarding this matter.
