Poor performance Navisworks Manage 2023

Hi,

We recently started using Navisworks Manage 2023. However, we are experiencing problems refreshing the layout in Navisworks after making a change on a sub-layout in Inventor. Refreshing takes a lot of time. With, for us, medium-sized layouts it runs to 2 or 3 minutes. 

 

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10850H CPU @ 2.70GHz 2.71 GHz

Installed RAM: 32.0 GB (31.8 GB usable)

System type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

 

Can anyone help us find the cause of this poor performance?

 

As an example, I have attached some files. These consist of:

- 1_Building.ipt: directly attached in Navisworks

- 2_Conveyors.iam: directly attached in Navisworks, this sublayout consists of: 

           *2.1_Conveyor.ipt

           *2.2_Conveyor.ipt

           *2.3_Conveyor.ipt

           *2.4_Conveyor.ipt

- 3_Railsystem.iam: directly attached in Navisworks, this FDU sublayout consists of: 

           *A set of FDU assets

- The project file we are working with: WSP Systems.ipj

I'm not sure about .ipt's.... but when using Revit you have RVT's & NWC's. if the Navisworks model was made using RVT imports, when the RVT changes, and the Navisworks model needs to update, it can take some time to open because it is updating the NWC.

This is why some people prefer to import NWC's instead of RVT's, because its quicker, but it doesn't automatically update when the RVT changes. so you have to choose where you want to spend your time 😀.

As a systems integrator, we do not use Revit but work entirely in Inventor. A workaround with Revit is therefore not applicable to us.

that's fine, I wasn't sure if Inventor had a similar process/workflow that could be looked into 😊

I loaded your assemblies and it took less than a minute to load. I did not edit any of the parts and test to see what the refresh time would be.

 

Are you opening these files up over the network? 

 

My laptop; i9 2.5GHz, 64GB Memory, RTX 3080 Ti Laptop GPU

That may be true. It is also a very simple example compared to our real work. And with this simple example, it already takes half a minute. The compositions in our day-to-day work are much more elaborate and then the waiting time rises to 2 or 3 minutes.

We open the files from the local disk.

One of our clients has a similar issue as you. They have desktop workstations that I envy and their data is stored on the network drive. There open / refresh times were 5 plus minutes.

 

What they have done is utilize a processing machine. This is an additional desktop that on a regular basis (using windows Scheduler and iConstruct). It opens the NWF, refreshes the assembles, and makes new NWC files for everyone. 

 

The solution is NOT perfect, but it is speeding up the process. Might be something to consider.
