Thank you for your post. In this case there are many features of grid lines for use in coordination, but measurements to structures, from a grid line, is not able at this time. I do apologize for this, but I also want to stress the other important functionality of the grids. To help, I have included a link below with a reference to our blog that we (Navisworks staff) post tips and tricks in. This particular post is specific to the grid functionality and how you can leverage the power of the tools. Please note this is referencing the 2013 software, but the video in the link and the details of the grids are applicable for 2013/2014/2015/2016. Please let us know if this helped and if you have any questions. Thank you and we look forward to your reply update.

I wanted to reach out and see if you had a moment to look at and review the post last week? Please let us know if this helped, or if there are any additional questions. Thank you and we look forward to your reply update.
From your reply the software currently doesn't support measuring from a grid line to elements in the model. It would be a good wish list item for you guys to work on then. I am aware of the features of grids. I mainly use AutoCAD Fabrication products and I have started using Revit to create just the grids for our projects to use in our corrdination. One of the other things that is a pain in Revit is that you have to have a least one Revit object in order to export a grid from Revit to Navis. So I always put a column in our Revit Grid so that I can export the grid.
If you like I’d suggest leaving feedback at the below link. Information gathered is used to improve the application.

Thanks again for posting.
You can append a 2D CAD Floorplan that has the grids you're wanting and measure from the model geometry to the 2D CAD Gridline (see attached image).
I know I can do all of these things as a work around. I would just like to be able to have a Revit grid in my Navisworks model and be able to measure from that. I think this should just be a additional feature of the software. It would save time and maintain a smaller model.
So as a solution has still not appeared in Navis 2018 I wanted to share a workaround I created. The nice thing about this is that it helps both CAD users in location awareness while zoomed in in 2D/3D Plans as well as Navis users for measuring from Grids and Identifying Gridlines without having to navigate to a column or orientate the view so they can see the projected grid lines above or below.
It functions well but I'm sure someone out there can improve on it or do something more elegant. Either way hope it helps out some folks out there and teaches us the even vanilla Autocad can be given some smarts to help it play in the BIM world.
Find attached PDF File with the procedure.
