Files not showing - 2019

I've got a user who, when using Navisworks, gets the "can't resolve external reference" error on numerous files.

This seems to be a standard error based on what other users here have stated. They would typically just select the "Ignore all" button and carry on. The parts would still load/show in Navisworks without issue.

But this one has a few files that simply do not show up in Navisworks, even though they are in the Inventor model.

One thing we have noticed is Navisworks only seems to "see" files that reside within the main directory of the project. It doesn't find any files that reside in our Vault libraries.

(all project work is located in subfolders under the "ENG" folder, all standard parts reside in the various Library folders):

Ideas?

Just a thought, if you’re opening your file from a web server, Navisworks will look for the same server location the next time you re-open the file. If this user does not have Internet connection, the Resolve dialog box will be displayed to inform about those missing files.

The user that is having this specific issue is attempting to open files while on the network and the files are either in Vault or on his local C drive.

Well, Could he Browse to those missing files locations rather than choosing the Ignore All option.

@a_meteni, Good point. I've asked him to attempt such and verify.

I asked such earlier but he said there were too many files to do that for, so I have to assume he didn't bother.

Plus word had it that if he just did a "ignore all" the files would show anyways....that's not the case here.

We use it for clash detection and from I've just been told, these missing files could have very well led to a missed clash that just cost us over $100k to fix. Management is not happy and understandably so.

Well, the user is now in a pinch. He's got a presentation to do for a customer, so he went ahead and manually set all the links for the parts.

Saves the file and exits.

Opens the file and all the paths are still there, but now it can't find the parts yet again, even with the links fixed to where these parts reside...wth?

I'm stumped on this one, waiting on Adesk to chime in.

Have you opened a Support Case with Autodesk to see if they can help with this problem?  This is mainly a user supported platform even though there are times that Autodesk personnel do chime in on threads.

@brettgatti, Yes I have. Just figured I'd cover all bases to see if we can get this resolved sooner, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

We were set to have a conference call and share screens to show what's happening but the user couldn't fit it into his schedule in time for his presentation.

Either way this seems to be an issue on more than one users system, so it still needs to be resolved.

Good luck with your support call and please let us know once you have a solution - in case this happens to others.

Just wanted to give a small update of sorts.

Adesk was able to verify this is happening and are currently working on a fix...it has been escalated.

If and when I get the fix, I will be sure to post it here.

I created a Material User library, with customized materials for mediums, acc.to the company standard. This custom library is used for different projects.
When opening a model in Navisworks Manage, I used to get the same "can't resolve external reference" error.
If I choose the „Ignore All” option, it looks good, but only in Navisworks Manage.
Opened by Navisworks Freedom (what the client has) the 3D model looks weird.
Lots of material has lost and turned to black. If I select „Browse„ there are too many files to do that.
I collected the missing pictures (.png files, 40 lost external references) in one library.
I do not know what to do next. Would be nice to have a solution.

I hear ya. We are still waiting on this fix as well. Haven't heard any update on the issue from AD just yet.

I do have a bi-weekly call with them next Wednesday, but I really hope to hear something by then.

As a bit of an update on this....there's no update on this.

Talked with Adesk yesterday and it's still set at "waiting on internal response" or something to that effect.

I am sorry to reopen an old thread, but did we get a solution on this? I am getting a similar problem and have looked everywhere without any luck. Thanks!

I"m also getting the same problem using Inventor / Vault and Navisworks Manage.  Was there any solution in the end?
