Modeling Material Removal

Hello,

I'm looking at getting Nastran to improve my workplace capacity to design and model cutting tools. Does anyone out there know if Nastran can be used to actually model the removal of material, i.e. using a drill to create a a hole, not the CNC controlling of such a drill but how a specific geometry might interact with a material. Is this a possibility? Thanks.

Based on a post about modeling tensile tests in the In-CAD forum, I don't think so.

If I understand correctly, you are talking machining intention vs. design intention, right? So Inventor can be used as design intention to get what you want without any specific drill information by leveraging command Hole, cut extrude, etc.

Is this removal just for just visual representation or do you want analysis from it?

Probably not what you want, but you can animate a cut feature dimension of an assembly within Inventor Studio to show the cut visually. Might be able to leverage CAM Software to visually show the removal as well.

Not sure about the material removal options within Nastran, I'll report back if I can find more info.

Nastran will not simulate the removal of material because it does not have a way to separate elements or split them apart.

What in particular are you trying to learn from such an analysis? Perhaps what you really want can be obtained without the need to analyze the entire process.

Not with Nastran In-CAD or similar FEA tools at the same level. You will need to look at higher end products such as Abaqus. If you Google the phrase "Abaqus chip morphology" you will see some examples.

Might also be possible with the Autodesk Fusion 360 Ultimate Event Simulation (the old Terragrande explicit nonlinear solver), which has, or at least had, element deletion capability.

You can simulate material cutting in the Event Simulation module in Fusion 360 Ultimate but be aware it's still a very basic functionality. No advanced material models (i.e. Johnson-Cook), there are maybe some limitations on a server side (this is my personal impression) regarding the model size (solution time) etc.
