Vector Displacement Map - Dynamic Tesselation

I have a few questions concerning the use of Vector Displacement Maps and the resulting sculpt quality. Since I'm new to Mudbox I grabbed Craig Barr's VDM's (which are only 1k). First thing I noticed with Dynamic Tesselation is that the result is very jagged in comparison to a subdivided mesh, probably due to the triangulation compared to a more uniform mesh. Note that the bottom strokes in both cases are more jagged as they were created with on a lower subdivision level/ tesselation threshold.

So this brought up two questions: considering that the first two images equate to half a million polygons on a 6 million plane, is the lower resolution of the VDM's contributing to the jaggedness seen at the top of the ridge? Since the stamp spacing was set to 0, so that shouldn't be the issue.

The second question is: are vector displacement maps unusable with tesselation or is this (again) an issue with the VDM's resolution? And if so, what resolution should be used as best practice for better results?

i noticed that when using Vdm stamps with tesselation. it seems to slow down the stroke. So if you want a smooth stroke I suggest to turn on steady stroke in the brush options. The Jagginess is just due to not setting the tesselation settings high enough. Hold down the n key to adjust on the fly. The tessellation is not smart enough to add even topology along the sharp edges.
