uv layout overlapping causing transparent mesh and glitching

I've been struggling with this all day but for some reason I can't get this model to work with overlapping uv's

 

I'm getting the geometry glitching up, and half the model being transparent.

 

Also excuse the odd appearance of the textures otherwise, I remapped uvs and because of this problem i haven't been able to start actually texturing yet.

 

I have images attached below. 

 

First is how it looks once the texture is applied (does not look like this before applying texture), second is how it looks after subdividing, and third is the uv's. 

 

Enabling viewing both sides does not fix it either.

i have done an rexport from mudbox to OBJ and reimported the meshes and everything worked like expected...
