This shouldn't be this hard: Masks

Please tell me how to create a mask.  I don't want ambient occlusion.  I don't want to make a stencil.  I just want a mask so I can paint precisely.  And I want to be able to see the mask.  I can turn on a mask layer but nothing happens when I paint on it.  And please assume I'm new at this.  I don't care about sculpting masks.  And if I'm supposed to use something else like Freeze or whatever, I'd be happy to.  But this is really frustrating.  Please help.  I just want clean lines so I need masks and I need to be able to actually see them.  Thank you.

paint a black and white texture and move them onto an other layer and it will be converted into the mask....
