Mudbox to 3DS Max Arnold Vector Displacement

Anonymous
Not applicable

I'm trying to get the vector displacement maps I generate in Mudbox to work with Arnold in 3DS Max.

Appearently I have a problem to find the right scale value in Arnolds VectorMap. When I test the Ear displacement Map from Arnolds Documentation I've to crank up the scale value from 1 to 100 to make it look right (and I've to Change Axis-Order to XZY, what's not mentioned anywhere).

When I try my own exported Vector Map I can't barely see anything wit the value of 100. But if I crank it up further to around 400 it looks almost right. Are there any „rules“ how to calculate the exact value for the scale parameter, when using Mudbox Vector Displacement Maps with Arnold? Probably I didn't get the workflow right?

Any advice would be very welcome.

Best regards Michael

Hi thanks for posting!

This is a great question, I found this tutorial: Vector Displacement from Mudbox to Arnold

I hope that helps! 🙂

The way arnolds vector displacement is implemented differs a lot between Maya and 3DS Max.

And the tutorial doesn't adress the questions I'm posing in my initial post, for example unpredictable scale values and Axis-Order.

Thus, unfortunately it doesn't help at all.

I guess I got the clue.

The decisive element is the right vector space during the export procedure in Mudbox.

You have to choose „absulute tangent“ in the vector displacement map options (like it is explained in the Maya tutorial).

Thanks for your help

I am getting trouble as well.

Ive started the sculpting process on a base human mesh in Mudbox. Created two layers (level 1 and level 4). Then I am trying to render using 3Ds Max’s Arnold.

I did the retopology in the mudbox, simply pushing the buttons, i didn’t select any curves... Target the base level 0 model, and got a between model. Then I extract the UVs vector displacement map (using absolute tangent) , imported the obj file with texture coords enabled. Applied Arnold propreties displacement and subdivision, and then got nothing but the retopologized mesh from mudbox with no details at all. Trying to understand.
