I made this for an assignment at university a couple weeks ago. Today in the morning the teacher emailed me asking wich version of Mudbox did I use because a message poped up when he tried opening my file saying it was "from a newer version or corrupted". I ran to my pc and tried opening the file only to find the same message on my screen.
I've already tried changing the .bak file extension to .mud but the result is the exact same.
Does anyone know how to recover my file? My grade depends on it and I'm on the verge of having a panic attack.

Hi, I believe DiskInternals Uneraser File Recovery software https://www.diskinternals.com/uneraser/ can repair and recover your deleted data. There were few times when it was relly helpful for me. This software can appropriately restore files, which can be corrupted due to numerous reasons like Virus attacks, Disk Corruption, unexpected interruption in Backup process, CRC error and corruption of software etc. Hope it helps
