Hi all,
Is it necessary to include cold slug wells in a 1D runner simulation, or can they be omitted without impacting accuracy?
Thanks!
Hello @masaya_okamoto ,
Cold slug wells are important within an injection mold. Having a well designed cold slug well at the base of the sprue should capture most of the cold slugs from the machine nozzle.
With beam elements, I don't think having a cold slug or not have a cold slug well will impact the simulation in a large capacity. I would still suggest modeling them in since it might be slightly more accurate.

Hello @mason.myers
Thanks for your input!
I see what you mean. I’ll keep it in mind for those more sensitive cases, like precise valve gate control or balancing in family molds.
Appreciate the advice!
I think the cold slug if it's near the gate could make a difference, but otherwise is not that important. If it's near the gate, it can affect the velocity of the flow through the gate, at least until the cold slug fills. Then it wouldn't matter anymore.
