Clamp tonnage over-prediction

This is an old topic and i have dealt with this in the past. However, i want to re-confirm what i was able to investigate then.

If i have a hollow cylindrical part which is laying horizontal and i gate on the top (the exact location doesnot matter for now) will my clamp tonnage be SIGNIFICANTLY overpredicted because of the huge "overlap" in areas (top half and bottom half).

If so (as explained in help), it will explain my current high results and i will be very happy LOL...

Hallo,

There is a good solution to avoid this over-prediction of the clampforce.

Use custom results   ClampingForce on Plane    and use a plane perpendicular to the gating,

or parallel to the splitline.  This custom results gives the correct clamping force.

The normal ClampingforceXY counts area's behind each other double, so it is only valifd for flat parts

For a proper calculation of the clamping force, you must orientate your mesh with the release axis in the Z direction.

If it contains overlaped surfaces, it must be specified in the properties of the elements concerned.

Aart's solution works.

I dont know what happens differently in the background and why the custom plot cannot be the default plot, but it works. Is there any "fine print" I need to be aware of when using this custom plot.

It'd be nice to include a note about this plot in the clamp tonnage plot help under the overprediction section.

I also understand that part orientation needs to be related to the Z-axis and that i have the option to eliminate particular elements from clamp tonnage calculation but some times there are so many elements and none of the filter/selection methods work to make the selection easy.

Again thanks for the solution.
