Stencil not working

I created a 500x500 pixel PNG using paint and added it to the stencil tool to label models, but once I select the stencil I want and click the model to apply it the stencil is not used, and instead, meshmixer applies whichever default stencil was previously selected.

After adding the stencil via the Plus button it is not loaded automatically to be used. You need to select it in the flyout to use it.
