Lasso select tool not working

I can't select an area of my mesh with the lasso tool anymore. If I'm off object, I can create the red select lines, but not on the model. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Attached video shows what I'm doing.

The lasso tool cannot work in that way while on a surface. You need to click hold and drag.
