UV Checker not showing in viewport and strange shading

Maya 2017

Viewport 2.0

When I turn on the UV checker it doesn't show in the viewport, as I rotate around the object it starts to change from dark to light. If I deselect the object it looks fine. I only seem to have this error when I turn on the UV checker and have an object selected. I opened a different project and the UV checker works fine. I tried resetting my prefs folder, assigning a new shader, deleting history, repairing Maya to default state.

The UVs are fine. I ended up opening a new scene, importing the file that was giving me an issue, it fixed itself. I saved it in that new scene, restored my pref folder. I have no idea how this happened in the first place.

Hi!

If import fixed it it's likely a UI setting in the file (something that get's skipped when importing).

But without a scene-file i can't check this.
