Toon shader + transparency map

Not applicable

Hi,

I've been trying to get a transparency map working on a toon shader in Maya 2014. No matter how I connect it or what I try it does not seem to work. The transprancy map works on any other texture type. Is it not possible to add transparency to a toon material?

Any advice woudl be really helpful, thanks.

Which toon shader are you using...and where are you trying to plug in the map?

Hi,

It's okay I figured it out. So I'm using .png images with a built in alpha. Normally this is all you need for maya to automatically understand the transparency when applying it to the color layer. In the toon shader the only way I got it to work was using a black and white transparency map, separate from the color .png image.

Exactly!  I did some experimenting with a transparency map that I created in Mudbox (black and white) on a toon shader in Maya, and was going to tell you how I did it...guess I don't need to.

I have no idea if anyone would respond to this but could someone post how they achieved this? right now I have textures showing up but can seem to get the opacity working. I even made a black and white mask and that is also not working. I am using this post to get textures to show on the toon shader.

You'll get far better results , better rendered images and more control with Arnold toon shaders , Vray and Renderman toon shaders. If you look online you'll see how artists are doing amazing cartoon and Manga shading with these professional render engines.

I'm sorry I can't be more helpful on this one, maybe someone else will give you some tips with the legacy Toon.

Best regards.
