I'm not sure I understand exactly what you are trying to do.  Are you using the new Render Setup system?  the legacy render layers?  are trying to create a render layer override?  Please be aware that if you are using the Render Setup, you must create a collection and drag your objects into that area.  As far as being able to drag your render settings tab into the collections, I think you should take a look at this workflow, as I don't believe that is possible and thus you are getting errors as you are using Maya in a way it was not designed to work.. Please correct me if I'm wrong, yet I don't see any way of middle mouse dragging "render settings tab" into into a collection or a render layer.  You can create overrides with different render settings by using the Add override tab and dragging from the "Attribute Editors" tabs that are acceptable for render overrides.

Please let me know if you have gotten your render setup to work as designed, and if you would like, please make a short video of your workflow to see if I miss-understood your question in anyway.  I look forward to your reply.  Thanks.

Hi Cornelh ,
Thanks for your reply, I made a screen-cast when I had the issue , in the end just re installed the software and it sorted the problem. Before re-installing Maya I had the layers set up complete with the collections etc but for some reason the layers wouldn't accept the render setup override , but now it drags onto the layers with no problems 🙂

Regards
Guy

Awesome to hear you got it sorted out. I also didn't get your question until your reply, now.. all good.  I will hit your post as a solution, as it looks like a re-install was the trick to Render Setup acting up.  cheers and thanks for the feed back!!
