Render just shadows?

Is there a way to Render just the shadows of an object without rendering the object itself? I'm using a shadow matte plane if that makes a difference. I've tried to turn visibility of the objects off a couple of different ways, but it also turns off the visibility of the shadows. I just need to shadows rendered for a project. thanks.

Yes you can render almost anything separately for compositing in any 3D application.

Watch some render set up videos and look in the Maya documentation.

Disable in the Shape node:

Render Stats -> Primary Visibility
