The problem is that mental ray does not render any kind of light except for spotlight. Even if GI is on, the render screen is completely black, with no signs of lights. Sun and sky creation work, but none of the other lights (direct, volume, area, etc.) do.

Yes, I'm familiar with this issue. I have found the latest (and lastest) available mental ray on their forum, which was for Maya 2018. Therefore, the problem is not in the version. I also found out that it renders directional light, so in total just two.
