Maya Renderer shadow pass hard edge prolem

Hi there, I have a problem that I remember having in the past but I forgot the solution. I had a 6 year break with 3D animation...

I set up my scene with the new render layer setup. I created a shadow pass and added all lights and geometry needed. then I created a shader override using a background color shader to render the shadows.

What I get is a hard edge on my geometry (see attached image).

the lights are setup a typical 3 spotlight fashion. Main, brighten and counter light. Only the main spotlight is casting a shadow (KISS).

I fiddled with the normals, the uv mapping the background shader settings (no reflection, no specular) and the render settings. Softening the normals sort of moves the hard edge, but doesn't eliminate it. The only thing that cures the hard edge is moving the light up. But I cannot do that as it would change the entire lighting of the scene...

I must be missing something here.

Sorry for double posting... But I am at a loss. This used to work like a charm...

- Created a plane a sphere and a cylinder (see image "Recreate_ColorPass.jpg" Maya Software "Production Quality)

- Created a spotlight with raytracing shadows (4 / 26 / 1)

- Created a "useBackground" shader (spec: black / Reflectivity: 0 / Reflection Limit: 0 / Shadow Mask: 1 / Matte Opacity Gain / Matte Opacity: 1) (see image "Recreate_ShadowPass.jpg" Maya Software Production Quality)

Especially terrible is the hard break of the on the sphere where it goes 100% black (see image Recreate_ShadowPass2.jpg)

This is Maya 2019.2 on Windows 10 Pro 64 bit.

Any pointer would be really appreciated. Thanks!
