Image Sequences in 2016 Hypershade are incredibly slow.

I am having an issue where if I'm working in the Hypershade and any file nodes in the work area are loading an image sequence, any change to any part of the shading network causes a long pause in which nothing can be done.

As soon as the image sequences are disabled, everything becomes responsive again.

This problem did not exist in 2015.

I've tried closing the Material Viewer, i've tried turning off swatch update, neither work. Altering a shader with an animated texture has effectively become a multi-hour ordeal.

Does anyone know of a solution or workaround?

Edit (additional info): The shaders in question have several animated textures feeding into a layered texture. Simpler textures still pause though for not as long. Either way, this was not happening in 2015.
