How to Render Overlapping Geometry

Hi there! I am trying to make a minecraft character rig similar to the ones by element animation. The rig looks best when the arm geometry overlaps with itself, however this creates some weird renders in maya. Can anyone show me a way to render the arms like the ones in element animation? It is clear that there is some strange geo overlap and distortion in their animations, but it looks so much better than mine. Thanks!!!

Hi!

I highly recommend to prevent overlapping geometry.

The only way to handle this, and it seems this is done for the other object, is to make the arms slightly smaller at the outside, so there is at least a small distance between the faces when the arm is bent.
