Compress Animation

Hello I have large animation files that I rendered as targa images and then created them as animation using VirtualDub. Now I have the animation files in .avi but they are pretty big to work with in movie editing program (I still need to add title, credits, maybe cut some parts etc.) So what is the best way to compress them and to not lose quality. Once I think tried with Movie Maker but I lost some of the quality.

Many Thanks

i recommend to have the file in MOV extension as it is higher quality with lower size.. but if you insist to use AVI there are alot of codec which you can use which maintain the quality but less file size... search about it and you'll find enough as i never used AVI for my final result video

except for the final movie there is usually no reason to convert image sequences to a movie file of any kind. all (halfway professional) editing software should be able to read image sequences.

Same here - I do as much as possible using the image sequence.  I used to do that multi-stage process and it's find for lower quality, preview type stuff.

I also don't do the entire end product in one "go", but rather with logical groups of sequences.  That includes both overlays and audio/music.  Once the final product is "locked in" the groups and associated audio tracks are fired off to the overall video container.
