Can't change the color attributes of Xgen Primitives/eyelashes

Hi guys,

I am fairly new to Maya and I'm trying to learn the hard way by watching tutorials. I am currently using Autodesk Maya 2020.

However I've come quite a long way in the process of sculpting a human head and now I am doing the eyelashes. I have created a basic eyelash mesh, and Xgen finally seem to be working fine generating the Primitives (I've only had trouble with Xgen lately).

I have followed a step-by-step tutorial uploaded by Academic Phoenix Plus on how to create eyelashes, but I am currently stuck. I want a darker color to the eyelashes, but I can't figure out how to change the color of the Primitives / eyelashes. From the tutorial (timestamp 12:35 into the video) it seem she goes directly into Hypershade graph, pick "HairPhysicalShader" and from there just adjusting the slide of the Root Color, Tip Color which instantly changes the attributes of the Primitives /eyelashes.

However, when I do this, it seems that the Hair Physical Shader is applied to the mesh itself? When I adjust the slide of the Root Color, Tip Color it just changes the attributes of the mesh? No change happens to the Primitives/eyelashes? What am I missing or doing wrong? Something to do with the connections in Hypergraph?

I don't have a ton of experience working in the Hypershade graph, so please (if possible) explain to me in simplistic way.

Please se attached picture. As you probably can tell, the mesh itself has a "yellowish" tint to it.

Thank you in advance!

Select the xgen description and assign a hair shader.

I didn't had much time working with Maya lately so I have not tested your advice until now, however from what I could tell from your answer, I've done exactly what you suggested.

I have allready created a description, and the shader I use is "Hair Physical Shader", however when I go to Attribute Editor where I have all the color options and change the the values from the slides, the only thing that changes color is the mesh itself.

And there's my problem; I only want the Xgen eyelashes to change color. No matter what I set the values to, the eyelashes themselves doesn't change color.

Do I have to change some connections in the Hypergraph? If so, please explain to me like I am 5.

I have attached yet another screenshot which, hopefully, explain what I mean. I just picked a random color (in this case red). As you can tell the mesh is affected, and therefore red. The color doesn't apply to the eyelashes.

If the mesh does change color i assume you assigned the shader to the mesh and not the description.

Yeah, you're definately right. But I'm at a loss. How exactly do I apply a shader to Xgen?

Excuse me for being this novice but going on/off Maya for longer periods of time and not having the time to put in all the hard work and effort makes a person forget easily.

Just select it in the outliner and apply the shader.
