  • Hi, long time Maya user but first time to the forum. To settle an argument I would like to find some info to  answer to a particular question. For years now I've been hearing colleagues say Autodesk has been thinking about deprecating MEL. Actually I've heard this since I was in school. I like MEL so I'll keep using it. But yeah, I cannot find any info or any official statement of this claim. My question, is this true or just some rumor? If so, are there any article or talks on it that I can look up? Thanks

Rumour.

Large parts of Maya are created using MEL scripts and there are thousands of MEL files in the Maya installation.

MEL isn't going away anytime soon. MEL is great for simple scripts but for more serious plug-in development Python is the way to go since it has better data structures, better string and regular expression support, classes/objects and a rich ecosystem of 3rd party libraries.
