Object hidden status

Is it possible to return the  hidden/shown status of  an object (as in Display > Hide > Hide Selection & Display > Show > Show Selection)?

As the returnHidden flag seems to some sort of Mayan joke. 😞

Please note I am NOT talking about the animated attribute visibility of an object. 

isObjHidden = cmds.hide( returnHidden = True )

The show / hide feature uses the "Visibility" Attribute.
