In mel is it possible to visually highlite components without selecting them?

Hi, there any way highlite or colorize some components without selecting them, I'd like to be able to flag some components visually, but not interrupt the users modeling workflow by changing their selection.

Check out the "color" command.

It looks like the color command only changes the wireframe of the selected object, I'd like to be able to high lite 5 verts for example without selecting them just visually change their colour.

That would be analogous to Maya's proximity highlighting.  I would try to track down what function does that and then see what options there are to customize the highlighting to your needs.
