Deform from a mesh to another

Hi all,

I was wondering how would I go about deform a mesh to another.

say I have 2 meshes.

The 1st one on the left and I want to deform this to the middle one.

However, I want to take in to account the nearby vertices so as to smoothly deform the whole mesh.

The 3rd mesh (on the right is what I would like to end up with more or less).

Are you referring to BlendShapes?

1 Create object

2 Duplicate it

3 Select original shift select child

4 In Animation tab Anim Deform > Blend Shape (Different Maya version keep blend shape options in different places)

Basically, I was looking for smth along the lines of having a FFD like deformation cause with blend shapes

it source would linearly deform to destination mesh, hence the final shape would be identical to the destination which is not what I am after.

In contrast ,what I 'd like is some sort of FFD, maybe a lattice or similar applied to the source but instead of say having a lattice box (made of X control points to drive the source mesh deformation),

use the source's vertices as control points themselves.

I suppose if I could have a custom lattice of some sort made of the source meshe's vertices that would be an approach on it's own but is this possible.
