UV Mapping Warping UV Islands

Hi everyone, I have posted a similar question in this forum before but I am really not sure what's going on. I am have a lot of trouble with the UV mapping tool in Maya because it seems to warp everything I try to unwrap with it. Here is an example scene and I just can't seem to figure out what's going on but this happens with a lot of my models and scenes in Maya.

I am trying in this example to unwrap a simple can with some dimples I modeled in there to give it some texture and the UV mapper continues to be a mystery to me. Why this is happening is beyond my understanding but when I make reasonable cuts in the model to the sides it does this strange warping like you can see in the pictures below.

I start with a simple camera based projecting, make my cuts like you can see in this picture:

Then I unfold and I get this result:

after unfolding.png

I'm really hoping to get some insight here. Is there something about the way I've modeled this or something going on that I just don't understand about UV Mapping?

Any and all insights are appreciated!

This shape is very simple , just do a cylindrical map, then select the bottom , separate and unfold, then back to the container walls and unfold horizontal and then vertical, don’t use the automatic unfold for this except for the bottom. There’s no need to cut anything with this method. Also if you make your custom Uv toolbar with the right tools this is just a few clicks and it’s done. UV custom shelf. https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya-lt/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2020/ENU/MayaL...

So this was the result using this method, what do you mean by straighten horizontal and verticals?

Read the UV documentation first and a lot of stuff will make sense.

Okay I'm not sure where I got lost. I did use the cylindrical method and got the bottom to unfold but I'm not sure about the walls. When u say straighten the walls vertically and horizontally without cutting are you referring to the "Unfold Along" tools in the U and V axis?

Okay gotcha thanks for your feedback I really appreciate it! I forgot I could open the options window. This was my result when I unwrapped horizontally and vertically so I'm not sure what else is going on. Would it be easier for you to look at the model yourself? I can share a download link
