Selecting ONLY certain vertices

Hello,

I have a block that has a subdivision of 20 on Width, Height and Depth.  I right click and select "vertex".  I wish to only select certain vertices and extrude them.      Problem:  When I select the vertices I require, many other vertices around this block object get selected as well.   I am looking at selecting vertices ONLY from the front of this block object without highlighting any other vertices.     What's the trick?   I am using Maya 2016 Extension 2

You can turn camera selection on in the tool settings Common Selection Options>Camera base selection , also vertices should not be extruded , choose faces instead.
