when i try to use move tool by pressing w or clicking on the tool, and then try to drag it from one of the axis, it simply uses select tool and can only use the move tool by cntrl+middlemousebutton. I was earlier able to use it with left click and was very convenient.
usually when i saw this happen it was related to gpu drivers not up to date so i would check that first. otherwise try different render engine settings in preferences.
