Problem with vertexes [Beginner]

I'm very (very!) new to Maya and following a tutorial. I've included a video showing the problem I'm having. The first cut is me, and the next is the tutorial.

Hi!

You have just 2 vertices on top of each other. Correct this (maybe merge them).

Okay. I never put two there, nor do I recall doing anything that would do so.

Okay so I can confirm when I change the vertex position etc a copy is left behind rather than two being on top of each other.
