Maya 2020 Not recognizing edge loops lines

I'm building a greenhouse for school and  I'm trying to place dirt under my plants in face mode but may is refusing to recognize the individual square

As can be seen in your screenshot face selection works.

I am not sure what you mean with "...Not recognizing edge loops lines", but the problem is probably related to having multiple faces on top of each other.

Please check "group1" in Outliner, there are multiple similar objects at the same position in your scene. I recommend to remove the duplicates and keep only one.
