dotted edge loop in viewport

The issue is shown in the screenshot I provided. The edge becomes dotted when inserting an edge loop but straight when extruding the edge. Why?

Hi @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

You probably accidentally hit the toggle soft/hard edges display. To fix this, select your object and then the shortcut for this is shift+RMB -> Soften/Harden edge -> Toggle soft edge display.

If that doesn't work, you can go to Settings/Preferences -> Display -> Polygons to Soft/Hard, Save Preferences and close Maya.

Then when you restart Maya you should be all set!

Please let me know if this helps or if you need any more assistance!
