Booleans won't work??

Hi

I'm a complete maya noob so it could be something obvious but I've been trying to figure out for nearly an hour what I'm doing wrong. I want to join these objects together and for the part outside the cube to be erased. No matter what boolean option I try the whole thing disappears. 

If anyone could help me I would be so grateful

The main problem is that your column section is made up of objects that you combined into one. Maya can't use objects like that for boolean operations.

It might be easier if you just moved the vertices outside the wall closer to the wall, and then extruded the wall out to hide them.

Ah okay, I did what you said and just decided to hide it.
