Boolean union doesn't delete internal geometry

I'm attempting to do some model 3d printing in maya 2016, after building my mesh and starting some boolean unions I've realized that some mesh won't delete inside the mesh, it's important that I get rid of all internal geometry from my mesh or it will mess up my 3d print can i have some help on my problem?

pictures:

- 1. mesh before boolean union 2. mesh placement 3. internal geometry after union (still some internal geometry)

(all help is appreciated)

Does 2016 have an intersection classification setting in the boolean union options? (I don't have Maya 2016 here)

If so try setting it to "edge".
